We are pleased to offer these original, engravings from George Louis Leclerc Buffon. A student of the Academy of Science, Buffon influenced the separation of science from theology, even before Darwins theory of evolution. He suggested that man and ape may be connected through a scientific, common ancestry. In addition, Buffon challenged existing religious dogmas and acknowledged that new theories were needed, believing that the Earth was more than 6,000 years old. These beautiful illustrations present mammals in their natural, historical backgrounds. Circa 1766-1799. Inside Dimension: 11" x 14". Outside Dimension: 13 3/4" x 16 3/4".

This print is from a 1895 German Encyclopedia by Meyers Konv.The default color of vertebrate eggs is the white of the calcium carbonate from which the shells are made, but some birds, mainly passerines, produce colored eggs. The pigments biliverdin and its zinc chelate give a green or blue ground color, and protoporphyrin produces reds and browns as a ground color or as spotting. Lorenz Oken (1779-1851), was a German transcendental naturalist, philosopher & physician. Born Okenfuss, the son of a farmer, he simplified his name to Oken while at medical school in Freiburg, Bavaria. From professor of Medicine at the University of Jena, he soon turned to philosophy & the natural sciences, publishing a controversial journal known as Isis. Oken was a prolific & vocal writer, lecturer and theorist, publishing many philosophical treatises during his life. His masterpiece and lasting legacy to the world is the 13-volume "Naturgeschichte für alle Stände" (Natural History for all Social Ranks), first published between 1833 and 1841.
