Eggs Vol. I ( #593)
This print is from a 1895 German Encyclopedia by Meyers Konv. The default color of vertebrate eggs is the white of the calcium carbonate from which the shells are made, but some birds, mainly passerines, produce colored eggs. The pigments biliverdin and its zinc chelate give a green or blue ground color, and protoporphyrin produces reds and browns as a ground color or as spotting. The tiny pores in the bird eggshells allow the embryo to breathe. The Inside Dimension: 13 1/2" x 11". The Outside Dimension: 14" x 16 1/2".

Gloxinia ( #589)
We are proud to offer this beautiful woodblock botanical print by Tanigami Konan (1879-1928). The work was to celebrate the seasons, so there are exuberant selections from all the seasons. The publication of these prints in 1917 was a very interesting time in Japanese print making, when the old traditional ways of wood block printing were giving way to new western print making technologies such as lithography & photo mechanical printing. The Inside Dimension: 21 3/4" x 16". The Outside Dimension: 24 1/4" x 18 1/2".
