I have designed a wall system that was envisioned to be used in either an efficiency style or studio apartment. It is roughly 8″ deep, 8′H and 8′W,with a aluminum wall that has horizontal metered tracks whcih are separated every two inches. The seats are aluminum platforms that are roughly 3.5″ Hx 18″ D and 22″ L. It has a housing/tip at the end of the platform that coincides with the groove of the wall system so it can be slid in place and guarantee a tight fit. There is a retractable leg which is housed in the outside portion of the seat (meaning away from the wall). The retractable, hinged leg is roughly 14-1/2″ long when open so with the ht the seat added to this dimension the overall ht. would be 18″. As mentioned, each horizontal track is spaced 2″ apart vertically, so the seat platform would be placed in the 9th track, so it is 18″ off the floor. Likewise, the table aluminum platform would be placed in the 15th track so it would be 30″ off the floor.
The aluminum eating surface/table platform is 26″D x 2.5″D x 22″ for a single seating and 42″ for a double seating. All aluminum platforms have holes cut out on either end so they can be hung behind the moveable aluminum track wall and placed in the “closet” portion of the system. There are aluminum rails inside the closet that can be moved to any ht. and “S” clips that can be used to hang the seating and table platforms when they are not in use. The aluminum wall track system is hung from casters that have a locking mechanism so when the wall is in place the wheels can be locked and the system will be stationary.
The closet system would have to be bolted into the wall for safety and functionality purposes. but It designed so the system can be moved whenever its owner vacates his/her space. It can be easily reintstalled as holes have been predrilled in the back of the interior of the closet at 16″ on center. New holes can be drilled into the back if the stud layout is different in your location. The seats of the bench platforms would be made out of woven bungee cord material in order to provide added flexible comfort.

Retractable shell to allow for the desired amount of privacy and allow for the piece to be used either as a sofa and provide more casual upright seating when retracted or as a pod like bed when slid all the way down. Ideal for small, city type apartments, and for people in single residency homes/studios.
They illustrate the many ways the bentwood ottoman can be used as an eating surface. It is thin enough to fit between the seams of each modular unit. As stated before, these modular cushions can be placed in many configurations within the frame, adapting to the needs of busy college students. When eating, college students are typically studying, watching t.v., or on their computers.

Check out a new favorite artist of our, Colleen Fehrenbach. Her work is inspiring and really makes us appreciate the skill and craft of the next generation of visual artists.
Sculpting clay enables me to portray the Sacredness of life. This is demonstrated in two of my series; Studies of Humanity, which utilizes my gift of seeing the core essence of a person and/or situation and putting it in a visual essay through portraiture; Earth Bowls are what Mother Nature might create if she were to spin her winds and fuse either sand, the stars, water, wood or stone together. I’ve had the blessing to participate in“Toe River” a public art project at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and look forward to furthering my career in providing art in public spaces.
In addition to sculpting, I have an affinity for the relationship between humans and machines, hence my love of the potters wheel. I create both decorative and functional pottery pieces that range from whimsical to handsome to spiritual. Creating beauty and infusing it with love, joy and serenity is my Life Path. Being a Certified Reiki Practitioner, I do a blessing on each piece before it leaves my studio, furthering my commitment to planting seeds of goodness on Mother Earth.

I’m attending Harrington College of Design for Interior Design. This is my first design challenge. As a single person that really likes to entertain, I like to have a variety of dining style…buffet, family and formal experiences. Often times because of the limited square footage from residing in the city, I’m attempting to resolve this issue my having a seating element that can convert into a table that can accommodate at least four additional diners.
I would also like for this seat to serve as an ottoman so after a long work or school day, I can rest my legs and enjoy the television when I dining solo. My favorite idea thus far is what I’ve named the “High Rise” because it has a classic appearance for city or suburban living, it’s gender neutral and has the possibility of being manufactured from different materials such as leather, wood or even an eco-friendly resin.
I’m open for suggestions.

In my previous entry I talked about the chair I am reconstructing. I am combining a rocking chair and table and chair for a child 2yrs – 5yrs old. Creating a table for children that has multiple uses will have value to both a child and parent.I have started sketching. In this first group of sketches I start to play with the angle of arc needed for a rocking chair. I also play with the idea of how to combine a table for eating, playing etc. and a rocking chair.
From my sketches I have created these renderings.
First a rocking chair and when flipped over, the back of the rocking chair becomes the table for the chair and table.
Built a model – this is a view of the piece as a table
This is a view of the piece as a rocking chair.
Next step will be to finalize proportions and rocking arc. We are heading to Hafele this week to learn about different fasteners and hardware which can be used to build this piece of furniture. My next submission will be an actual working model.
Since 2004 TLS by Design has been a family owned and run business delivering original fashion-forward quality solid wood casegoods and USA made upholstery. TLS stands for Total LifeStyle.TLS serves a variety of markets, with a strong foundation of designer clientele. The Boutique Hospitality market is another segment of the TLS business where they have designed custom seating and casegoods for a variety projects.
With a heart to help others, TLS by Design was the furniture sponsor for the 2009 season six finale of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” While the show usually selects a local retailer where they can shop from furniture to rugs to accessories, 5 days before the reveal, even after the home had been demolished, producers asked TLS to provide over $40,000 in custom made upholstery and casegoods.
From the EMHE experience, TLS’ Jeff Day met Mig & Tig’s Vicki Grazina, the Chicago retailer who has sponsored a show earlier in the season. After a number of phone conversations, Jeff and Vicki met in person, and Vicki asked TLS by Design to be a sponsor for the Fall 2009 Harrington School of Design “Design Challenge”. TLS will produce the winning upholstery design and the piece will be donated to charity.
Noir provides solid and strong well built tables. Hand finished, hewn surfaces give the impression of vintage, but well kept. To achieve better quality control, Noir’s furniture is manufactured mainly from their own factory in China and Indonesia. They select lumbers from well-known suppliers who guarantee their drying process specifically for export. On larger panels and backs, they use plywood to minimize the risk of shrinking or cracking.
All finished are hand applied and sanded repeatedly, then finished of with a lacquer top coat or wax. While they take measures to protect their furniture from climate difference in the US. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause warping or even cracking. Because of this, they strongly recommend, solid wood furniture should not be placed under direct sunlight. Also, in their warehouse they carry a wide array of one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories.

While watching Top Chef on Bravo, one of my favorite shows I couldn’t help but notice one of my most desired products we feature on Your Furniture Link, the lace porcelain vases from Fire Fly. I think it’s great that the designers who worked on the Top Chef house had enough sense to include such a cool product and from a brand that needs a little recognition.
An intricate, handcrafted white lace pattern wraps around a radiant orange porcelain vase for a dramatic presence. Coordinates beautifully with other styles of the Allure series of vases. This vase is water safe for fresh flowers.

Christopher Guy graces the cover of next months Metropolitan Home Magazine. In the article titled Snowbirds in Paradise by Beth Dunlop we see Christopher Guy furnishings being used in the dining room and in the bedroom. Here is an excerpt from the article: … he chose to cover the cross-legged Christopher Guy dining chairs in two, almost diametrically opposite, fabrics—a pitch-perfect polished white patent leather for the seat (“drop a meatball and get out the Windex,” jokes the designer) and an antique silk brocade fabric “document” from his personal textile collection. “I know it may seem irreverent,” Laslo says, “but I really do think about these things for a long time.”
And in the Bedroom Dunlop writes: Some of the references in the design are subtle, others less so. And for all its sophistication, the apartment has its moments of coy humor as well. Laslo likes to term the master bedroom’s Christopher Guy headboard, with its abstract sculpted fabric, “the Flintstones meet Hollywood glam.” Add to that a mirrored chest of drawers (Laslo has one himself that once belonged to Helena Rubinstein, “who used it to store shoes,” he says), gold-leaf drum side tables and a fanciful feathered White Nimbus chandelier and the Hollywood look is complete.
Here are some other great images from the same space.

The design that I have been working on is a piece in response to the survey’s trend of people eating in more of an informal setting versus formal dining. This is something that I can relate to; being a college student living on my own other than my cat who will occasionally join in on meals! I often find myself shoveling food into my mouth while lying on the sofa and watching TV or working on homework, which has motivated me to work on a solution that would make this process more practical. I was inspired by the organic clean forms of a spiraling sea shell and wanted to take this idea and turn it into a pod like “daybed.” The pod can be used as a bed and as a seating solution too.
The seating portion will have a hard surface that slides out of the pod that is ideal for surfing the web, homework and eating. The top enclosure is also retractable to give the desired amount of privacy. The pod is an ideal solution for a single person living in a small city apartment or studio, seeing as is duels as multiple furniture pieces, freeing up space!!! And who doesn’t like space?!? Soooo It’s still a work in progress, I need to look into materials and finishes which Is what I will post next! Looking forward to see everyone else’s solution!

It’s techniques are aimed to define a collection of furnishing system’s and accessories that strongly reflect a sense of contemporary living. The Jesse home is a unique dimension in which functional needs combine with feelings to create a space with a definition of individuality and luxury. The stylistic approach which Jesse has taken is one that suggests a total life style line. The differentiation between the daytime and nighttime living areas are very consistent.
The Terrence Sofa above, can be ordered in a variety of different sizes and finishes. Constructed from a wooden frame with different density polyurethane foam padding not only is this the best seat in the house but it also holds your drink for you. The seat cushions are made from non-deformable polyurethane which means they take ware and tare well. The back cushions are a reversible feather mix and the piece can be upholstered in leather or removable fabric. The handy dandy ledge on the back of the piece can be made from either dark oak or walnut and is a perfect option for those of us living in small spaces. Why place the soda on an end table when you can put down on the back of the couch.
Designed by Sergio Brioschi this wooden sideboard, which is available in two versions, offers a unique storage piece for any modern dining space. Shown on the left is the high boy version with 4 hanging doors and 2 inside drawers. On the right the low version with 4 hanging doors and 1 inside drawer, offers the feeling of a classic buffet. This piece come complete with wooden baseboard and handles. Finish options include dark oak, walnut, mat or my personal favorite, high gloss lacquer.

In this contest I will be redesigning a floor chair that is comfortable for about 5 minuets for an adult. My kids love to play with it as a slide when they turn it over. When flipped over it will provide a bench and eating table scaled to their size (ages 1 to 6). I’ve noticed when we eat out at restaurants and the places provide seating for children not a high chair but a table and chair scaled to their height, they love sitting in it. My wife and I are able to get them to focus on their food and sit at a table for an extended time (yes more than 5 minuets.).
Look for my sketches next week.

As a mother of four college students I finally have the opportunity to complete my education and pursue my dreams. Having been a flight attendant for many years I understand the importance of function and form especially in a confined space. My goal is to create a seating and eating area for a family’s private jet that will give comfort and freedom to a teenage recreation space.
My Client is the Davis Family A young family that travels often with their pre-teen children in a private jet. They would like to keep their children comfortable in a recreation room that has a space for seating and eating. Conceptually I hope To create a sofa and table area that the Davis children can enjoy in a multifunction room on the jet.

Per the research data and for my own personal inquires related to eating habits – I, as well as a majority of my counterparts enjoy making dinner together as a couple and eating dinner at home in front of the television.I propose a sofa inspired by mid century frame. Trays ‘pop up’ from sofa arms and adjust vertically and to desired horizontal plane. The back of the sofa also reclines in a 36 degree angle for post dinner snuggle time.Born and raised in The City of Chicago an employee of Coraggio textiles in The Merchandise Mart, part-time student at Harrington College of Design and full time design enthusiast.
Cameron Wudtke
A senior at Harrington College of Design. I designed a eating and seating solution for college students. I was inspired by Scandinavian Modern furniture and modular furniture. By combining these two elements, I was able to provide a wood frame for the modular furniture to keep it elevated from the ground. This remedies the risk of spillage that would destroy the upholstery of modular furniture that rests on the ground. The cubes are all removable and can be configured in a number of ways. The versatility allows college students (and presumably roommates) to adjust seating heights according to the tasks they’re performing while eating- as I’ve determined a majority of college students are multi-tasking while eating.
Keep checking back here on Fridays and Saturdays to see more from the Seating and Eating Challenge! Remember to keep sending those e-mails designers, because we can’t wait to see what you’re designing!

Get the look from one of the hottest shows on Television. Get inspired by Set Decorator Ellen Brill and her great designs. Read more in todays Blog. Follow the Link Below to see more images from the set and read about how you can achieve this look!
Often we forget to look beyond the actors when watching television or movies and when we do we miss out on a lot of great style ideas. One of my absolute favorite shows to take ideas from has to be Nip/Tuck. The show, which follows the lives of two pretentious egomaniac plastic surgeons and their crazy mixed up friends and family, has been a style star in Hollywood for five seasons. This has largely been due to the shows Set Decorator, Emmy nominated Ellen Brill. Ellen started as an interior designer and received her degree from UCLA in 1991. Her first job out of School was working in the art department for an independent film which she was credited as the set decorator on. After the films completion Brill was offered the same position on another film and has been in the television and film industry ever since.
In her sets for Nip/Tuck Brill brings inspirations from several different periods but has shown an affinity for incorporating mid-century modernist pieces from the likes of Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson and the Eames’. In the images above Brill was tasked to create spaces that were to be home to the McNamara/Troy surgeon team’s new Las Angeles office. The Pacific Blue sofa’s are a great homage to the location as well as the two palm inspired sculptures. The chandeliers give of an ambient light which bounces of the wood paneled walls and gives the waiting room a sense of warmth. This is something not often found in real life waiting rooms. The image directly above is the set designed to be the home of the bachelor surgeons. One would think this space was to nice to be a bachelor pad but even that is addressed in the series, as Dr. Troy often meets with his Interior Designer.
This set is one of my favorites and if you look closely you might see that the arm chairs are actually the same arm chairs from the set above. This is the nice thing about set design, you are allowed to incorporate pieces from one set in order to meet the requirements of the scene. This can also be true to your home. Try switching out the arm chair in your bedroom with the one in your living room just to switch things up. I am also inspired by the amazing floor covering which can be achieved at home by purchasing a large piece of canvas from an art store and painting out a pattern similar to the one seen in the image. Then coat the canvas with a layer of sealant to protect from wear and tare.
These Images are a mix of different spaces from when the show was in it’s first couple of seasons. The style then reflected something more down to earth, with it’s natural tones and interiors. The space at the top was the office of Dr. Troy and featured a grouping of Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chairs in a taupe tone. The bedroom shown belonged to Dr. McNamara and his wife. This is clear as the space looks shared and has a feminine touch as if Mrs. McNamara had decorated herself. Finally, we have the living room of Dr. Troy which has a cool tone that allows the viewer to appreciate the art in the space.
So if you are looking to add a little Nip/Tuck to your home here are some piece you might want to consider.

Terese Poulos
A senior at Harrington College of Design. I hold a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, where I primarily focused in photography. I am passionate about antiquing, cooking, travel, fashion, nutrition, and yoga. I have traveled to nine countries, Greece and China being among my favorites so far…
My inspiration comes from objects found on my journeys, whether in Indiana antique markets, street vendors in New York City, or exotic treasures kept from a back-packing trip to Europe. I have long been interested in American travel nostalgia, including Air Streams. On a recent camping trip during semester break I began thinking about seating and eating solutions for indoor and outdoor environments, which led to the inspiration for my design.

I come from the North Suburbs – Lake Forest. When it comes to design my inspirations come from nature – plants and animals (shapes). I find design to be fun but at the same time it is difficult cause there is so much furniture it could be a challenge to come up with something new.
I obeserved the way I eat along with my families ways too. As a family we eat in three parts of the house. Meaning we eat in the dining room on special occasions such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc and we eat in the kitchen – island counter top seating for regular night dinners and in the family room we watch tv use our laptops and phones along with eating snacks. For this project I have decided I am going to design a dining room chair, a decorative dining room chair.

Deidra Castelline
Currently a student at Harrington. I was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, and have always been interested in art and design. I am very excited about this contest and never really pictured myself designing furniture, but the more I research ideas the more interested I’ve become. I believe that design should be able to have many purposes so that several people can buy the same piece and use it differently to fit their needs. I have very sporadic eating habits when I am at my parents we always have a nice sit down meal once a day, however living in a studio by myself I eat most of my meals either on my couch or at the table.

I find that I appreciate pieces of furniture that can be used for more than one function. After looking at the Seating and Eating survey, I’ve confirmed what I’ve realized for years; that being that many times people eat at their sofa or in a lounge chair, rather than at a formal dining chair/table. While the Dining chair/table is not dead, I believe it’s taken a backseat to more casual furniture while eating.
Inspiration: The lama lounge chair designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba for Zanotta in 2006. This is both a lounge chair and a sitting chair, it serves dual purposes. I felt that by taking this idea and adding a unit to the end (extending the right side), with something that can possibly swivel in towards the person sitting, it would be a successful piece for sitting/ eating or lounging/eating. I would like to take the basis of this design and diversify it’s shape, as well as add an additional spot for food.
Concept: A sleek piece of furniture that functions as both lounge seating and has the ability to provide a secure area for eating.
Keep checking back here each week to see how the designs progress! Please feel free to comment on which design you like best and why. Feedback of any kind is definitely welcome!
