Great Bedding Collections for your Master Suite

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Ok, I’m not a counselor, but married ladies this ones for you.  Want to add some spice up you bedroom ?  Start by removing the floral quilt bedding with the ruffled lace shams and that adorable pink satin heart shaped  pillow you made in junior high school. The frilly curtains with the balloon valance and rope tassel tie backs can go too.

There’s nothing wrong with these choices per se, but this is a couple’s bedroom now.  Do you really want your husband having flashbacks to his kid sisters bedroom every time he opens the door.  I think not…

Bedding

Maculine and feminine accents–perfect shade of graphite softenned by yellow and teal accents

ok guys, don’t tell me you don’t like think the zebra pillows aren’t sexy…vavavoom

Bedding

Crisp clean lavender, blue, and white stripes reminiscent of beach vacations for two.

Slipcovered Headboard

Foyer: the mirror to the soul of your home

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Entrances are the eyes that reflect the soul of the entire house.  Whether your front door opens onto a three story foyer replete with grand staircase and gilded chandelier or is simply a few feet long, the impact is the same.  It should be the proverbial mirror into your  soul.  A reflection of your passions, dreams, and outlook.  Too heady?   I don’t think so .  If your home is not the place where you can safely express yourself , then where in the world is it?  Go find it– step outside your front door and spend a few minutes looking in, and put the “me” into “my house”.

Where art and function meet: sexy, sleek benches

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Bench

Neoclassic, and comfy enough for three.

BLACK REGENCY BENCH

Elegant, but a little flirtatious (the perfect woman?).  This chinosserie beauty blends beautifully with traditional furnishings or a more contemporary home.

Wood & Rattan Bench

The high arms make this masculine bench perfect for lounging lengthwise with the morning paper & latte,  or better yet, gazing out the window…

Logbench

The boldness of the lines and girth are juxtaposed by the warmth of the natural wood and the beauty of natural grain.  You can feel the waves lapping and the warm sand on you feet…

The delicious, delightful small console

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

CHEST

Petite accent consoles are to furniture design what appetizers are to a main entre at a restaurant.

Bombay Chest

Ever notice that usually the most interesting dishes on a menu are the appetizers?  They tend to be more creative  and satisfying than the official meal, and come in lot of tasty selections.

Arlon Chest - Heavily Distressed

So it is with small consoles.  They too are petite enough that you never have to ask  ”do I have room for this?”.  Instead they charm you with their proportions, design and functionality.

Sabrina Three Drawer Chest, Small

Not only do they bring a sparkle to any bland wall space, they provide that extra storage space no one can ever resist  (just like all those cheese plates and those innocent looking puff pasties we’ve been been sampling since Thanksgiving).

EMPIRE CHEST

Small consoles are also perfect to use instead of nightstands.  Average sized night tables are swallowed up when placed next an Eastern King bed whereas using a console in it’s place balances the room  and provides ample surface space for all the lotions, potions, and paperbacks.

Small consoles are  versatile, filling and fashionable, and compared to those pricey appetizers, they’re a bargain.

Manly Men Accessorize

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Your husband’s office, or man cave as he prefers, does not need to look like his college dorm thanks to the master of all manly accessories, Theodore Alexander.  Out with the football helmet phone, the college pendants and the giant empty Jim Bean bottle full of pennies.

Accesory

Replace his junior high bowling trophy with this handsome sculpture of man’s best friend.

Armillary Table Object

A nice visual hint to take you on that “honeymoon around the world we never had” trip

Stunning bronze crocodile paper weight.  No mother-in-law jokes please

Lovely “Medici Lions”  bookends–perfect for his beloved Spider Man comic book collection

The Amazing Expanding Bookcases

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Americans move on average every five years.  According to  Dr. Goodwin of NPR  our moving may have “something to do with our genes, because risk-taking and stimulus- seeking, which are adventurous, are two of the things that go into that risky business of moving, are in fact influenced by genetics. So, in a certain sense, we may have inherited some of these tendencies to be explorers and to be risk-takers, which explains I think some of the unique strengths of this country, as well as some of our problems”.

Interesting, you say, but what does this have to do with a design blog.  Well, every time we move the furniture either moves too or new furniture has to be purchased.  In my stores I see a lot of hesitancy about investing in a large quality piece  because it may not fit in the next house, and then what?

Shanghai Bookcase

These bookcases are all exceptional designs, and can stand alone or be placed side to side to fill an entire wall.  Notice no overhanging moulding at the top of this versatile cabinet; therefore 2 can stand together, be split on either side of a window, or used individually in just about any sized bedroom, dining, living, kid’s room.

Carmine Natural Limed Oak Bookshelf

Imagine a series of  these as bookcases in your spacious library.  Oops, now moving to a downtown loft?  These make dramatic, functional (my favorite!) room dividers.

Copenhagen Wall Unit - Open Bookcase - NEW

Perfect as an audio/bookcase/cat tree/bar in a city apartments or a  towel display in a  Vegas/Florida mega bathroom (not  kidding).

Manly Men Series,Part I: Area Rugs

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Hello boys.  As more and more of you are single longer either because of demanding careers, divorce, or whatever we’ve decided to focus  on your  special design needs from time to time in the Manly Men series.

Today I’m focusing on the importance of area rugs.  You installed gorgeous wood flooring,  bought nice furniture, and hung cool art,  but the place still feels a bit cold, unfinished ?  Rugs are the most important element to anchor  a room and make it look complete.

Tibetan Carpet 40

A no brainer.  The rich chocolate background and the all over design make this transitional wool rug perfect under coffee tables.

Rug

Pizzazz without worrying about matching colors.  A great choice for under dining tables to get the full effect of the dynamic pattern

Step it up a bit…Bold geometrics and go with anything colors

Delhi Black/ Silver

Ah, your classic boy ware– blue, brown, and stripes.  Nothing to fear with this choice, and the your dog will love the deep shag.

Small Sassy Side Tables

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Side tables are  the pieces that I encourage people to try something unusual and artsy with.   Since they are small, the design won’t be the focal point of the room, but will add a nice splash of personality and a bit of sparkle without being a major monetary investment.

Accent Table

This bit of chinoserie  has a great shape, style and color.  Place it next to a leather wing back to add a bit of whimsy.

BRIO RD END T/COMP

Perfect next to a bulky, square armed sofa. Love the shelving space too.

Love the retro look in a slightly larger scale for today’s furnishings.

The Perfect Contemporary Floor Lamps

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Below are some of my favorite  floor lamps when designing for a transitional or contemporary  home because they are both very stylish and very functional (I have a crazy quirk about things being functional–silly me). When shopping for contemporary lighting I often experience what I call  the Goldie Locks Syndrome– finding one that’s just right is a challenge.  Even though there are a gazillion styles out there they often tend to be either too wacky  modern, too cold modern, or too expensive modern .  These are just right…

Swan Floor Lamp

A gorgeous body and a fantastic shade of a face.  This brushed satin floor lamp  has brains and beauty — a large drum shade provides wides  coverage of  warm light, and its profile is more art sculpture than lamp base.

Workshop Floor Lamp

Top pick for modern lighting that isn’t a silver finish–like finding a needle in a haystack.  Masculine, industrial, and solid, it’s a great choice for lofts and offices.

Cooper Floor Lamp

The Audrey Hepburn of floor lamps. Sophisticated, tall, with a reserved beauty.  The design is both upscale, and whimsical.

A look back at the Performing Arts Centre for Saadiyat Island in the United Arab Emirates presented by Zaha Hadid

If your sourcing architects, check out our directory. Join if you are an architect and would like to be in our directory.

performing-arts-center-image-7.jpg

Zaha Hadid described the design of the Performing Arts Centre as “a sculptural form that emerges from a linear intersection of pedestrian paths within the cultural district, gradually developing into a growing organism that sprouts a network of successive branches. As it winds through the site, the architecture increases in complexity, building up height and depth and achieving multiple summits in the bodies housing the performance spaces, which spring from the structure like fruits on a vine and face westward, toward the water.”

performing-arts-center-image-6.jpg

“The Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre is a continuation of the long-standing relationship we have with the Guggenheim Foundation and with the Emirate. We are very honoured to be a part of the project,” states architect Zaha Hadid. “Our first Guggenheim exhibition design, ‘The Great Utopias’, was in 1992 whilst the very successful mid-retrospective of our work closed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York less than two months ago. We’ve also been working in Abu Dhabi for many years, the Sheikh Zayed Bridge was a seminal project for the office and its construction is well underway”.

performing-arts-center3.jpg

The Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre will be one of five major cultural institutions on the new 270-hectacre cultural district of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi – developed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation on behalf of the Tourism Development and Investment Company of Abu Dhabi (TDIC).

Hardware

Chinese Brass door closures and drawer pulls from Mother of Pearl and Sons Trading. Do you know what COM means when it comes to custom furniture? It means Customers Own Material. So when you are looking for a unique cabinet, side board, console or buffet and you go to a furniture designer to discuss building a custom piece, you can bring your own hardware. That is if the designer works with COM. Most do but others who are trying to make a profit off things like decorative hardware and overall material as well as the labor might not allow it. These Chinese details are a great option compared to the usual.

Design Artists and Modern Ideas at Danish Tea Shop!

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Photographs are copyright Enok Holsegard.

A look at Copenhagen studio WE architecture and the interior of a tea shop in Copenhagen, Denmark, which features an image of a pixelated teapot created by back-lit perforations on the counter and shelves. This clever idea is just one of the many seen in the space.

On the right hand wall you see several glass jars that are corked for freshness. This is how the Tea shop displays there goods for the public to handle and enjoy the various scents associated with the tea they are purchasing.

Becoming more and more popular again the use of all white really lets this space stand out and focuses on the product rather than an over designed interior space that might not speak to the customers the same way.

The store is called T-Magi and is a new Danish tea store for the exclusive French tea brand, Mariage Freres.

I particularly like how the perforated shelves remind me of a tea strainer for the use of loose teas. It is really a great adaptation of an idea and how one thinks about concept then introduces the various elements into the space. Way to go WE Architecture and T-Magi.

Reclining Furniture with Style!

Arctic Blue | Bean Bag

In principle the Sitting Bull looks like a standard beanbag chair, but when reviewed closely it´s really much more than that! Due to its unique design it can be formed and shaped, at your discretion, for optimal sitting comfort. Its filling is made out of specially produced EPS beads that are extremely durable and higher in quality, and not out of standard shredded Styrofoam waste like most low quality beanbags.

The Bull

Additionally, to Sitting Bull´s advantage, the cover material´s surface is made of sturdy, high quality Polyester that can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. But Sitting Bull´s real test in quality is when you finally sit in it, and only then you shall know that there is absolutely no comparison!

Mini Fashion Bull

Fabric is made of 100% polyester, is water resistant and breathable. Filling is made of extra small EPS-beads (polystyrene foamed beads) of the best available quality. Yarn material is made of 100% nylon thread with triple stitching, non-aging, UV-resistant, extra strong and tear proof. The cover fabric was tested by an external laboratory and received a top quality assessment.

The Bull

Closure: Velcro 4 inches (10 cm) wide and zipper – extra strong and childproof, Cover is easily cleaned with cold water and soap. For indoor and outdoor use, but should be stored inside (not for permanent outdoor use or storage). May be used as a chair, mat, or small mattress.
