Furniture Color Trends

Metallic hues like gold, silver, bronze and copper are becoming more and more popular in the home as well as in fashion design. This unique piece from Currey and Co. has artistic flare that will draw anyone’s attention. The shape and style are modeled after ancient Chinese furniture.

Wood tones that feature large grainy textures are taking place of the popular java or espresso tones. Stained furniture often means that you are buying anti-”green” home furnishings. Unless the piece has been stained or sealed with a water based treatment the furniture can not be considerd eco-friendly. So beware the green washing and look to more natural tone like the one seen here from Oggetti.

Orange is very popular right now as are reds and other warm tones. Warm toned furniture might be bold or loud but when placed in the right space with other color appropriate furnishings and wall color it can be right on the money. This tall sideboard in orange from Red Egg has so much personality that your other furniture will be jealous. Now I’m sure you are wondering what other colors you’d incorporate with orange and the answer is: blues, browns, white or hot pink. Think FUN FUN FUN!

Go Green! In this case we don’t only mean Eco-Friendly but we mean the color. I know that adding green furniture to a space might be a little on the nose but the color is hot this fall and will make a great impact on your earthy interior. Using colors from nature is a perfect way to bring the outside in and when you mix greens with browns like in this coffee table from CR Currin it makes a great statement.

My Favorite furniture Color trend is BLUE! This desk from A. P. Industries has an oceanic feel and great sensibility. Now I know what you’re thinking, “That piece belongs in a boys room.” well blue furniture isn’t just for boys any more. Adding an occasional piece like this to your space gives you a sense of artistic expression with out going over the top. Simple is better and when working with colored furniture that is key to a great overall design.

Furniture Ideas from the Set of Nip/Tuck

Set Decorator on Nip/Tuck

Often we forget to look beyond the actors when watching television or movies and when we do we miss out on a lot of great style ideas. One of my absolute favorite shows to take ideas from has to be Nip/Tuck. The show, which follows the lives of two pretentious egomaniac plastic surgeons and their crazy mixed up friends and family, has been a style star in Hollywood for five seasons. This has largely been due to the shows Set Decorator, Emmy nominated Ellen Brill. Ellen started as an interior designer and received her degree from UCLA in 1991. Her first job out of School was working in the art department for an independent film which she was credited as the set decorator on. After the films completion Brill was offered the same position on another film and has been in the television and film industry ever since.

In her sets for Nip/Tuck Brill brings inspirations from several different periods but has shown an affinity for incorporating mid-century modernist pieces from the likes of Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson and the Eames’. In the images above Brill was tasked to create spaces that were to be home to the McNamara/Troy surgeon team’s new Las Angeles office. The Pacific Blue sofa’s are a great homage to the location as well as the two palm inspired sculptures. The chandeliers give of an ambient light which bounces of the wood paneled walls and gives the waiting room a sense of warmth. This is something not often found in real life waiting rooms. The image directly above is the set designed to be the home of the bachelor surgeons. One would think this space was to nice to be a bachelor pad but even that is addressed in the series, as Dr. Troy often meets with his Interior Designer.

This set is one of my favorites and if you look closely you might see that the arm chairs are actually the same arm chairs from the set above. This is the nice thing about set design, you are allowed to incorporate pieces from one set in order to meet the requirements of the scene. This can also be true to your home. Try switching out the arm chair in your bedroom with the one in your living room just to switch things up. I am also inspired by the amazing floor covering which can be achieved at home by purchasing a large piece of canvas from an art store and painting out a pattern similar to the one seen in the image. Then coat the canvas with a layer of sealant to protect from wear and tare.

These Images are a mix of different spaces from when the show was in it’s first couple of seasons. The style then reflected something more down to earth, with it’s natural tones and interiors. The space at the top was the office of Dr. Troy and featured a grouping of Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chairs in a taupe tone. The bedroom shown belonged to Dr. McNamara and his wife. This is clear as the space looks shared and has a feminine touch as if Mrs. McNamara had decorated herself. Finally, we have the living room of Dr. Troy which has a cool tone that allows the viewer to appreciate the art in the space.

So if you are looking to add a little Nip/Tuck to your home here are some piece you might want to consider.

Johnathon Adler and Barbies Malibu Dream House

Remember when you were a child and it was your birthday or Christmas? Remember finding that one oblong present wrapped with a bow because it was extra special? Tearing back the wrapping to reveal a pink box with white script boasting the name on every little girls lips, Barbie. The original blonde bombshell was your favorite toy; due mostly to all the great accessories she required. Well now Barbie is no longer sitting her behind on plastic, shes moved up in the world thanks to the creative mind of Johnathan Adler. Though the interiors may have changed the house is still all Malibu.

Adler has combined alot of his own furniture designs along with pieces made custom for this particular project. The interiors respresent alot of key design ideas which Adler incorporates into his work on a regular basis. By keeping with-in his groovy mind set as well as mixing in classic Barbie colors like pink and orange, Adler has been able to bring the famous doll’s pad to life.

Now even though we love the work and the Interiors make us swoon we have to be realistic when it comes to incorporating this style into our own homes. Key design statements that will turn your space into a dream home like this are: Bright bold fabric choices, edited accessories, custom floor coverings and unique furniture pieces. The Toraja women of Suluwesi, Indonesia used this goblet shape seen in the table above for their mortar which serves as a pedestal base for the round table. He’s inspired by jewelry and homes, and many other interesting objects which he incorporates into all his work both catalog and custom.

From the Bottom of the Sea to your Home

One of my favorite trends right now is the incorporation of sea inspired accessories into eclectic and thoughtful interiors. Maybe it’s because I’m a cancer or because I grew up appreciating all the sea had to offer but now I’m not the only one who thinks fish are cool. From Acrylicore you see a sculptural piece that has been inspired by jelly fish. This paired with a wall mounted lighting unit would make a splash in any interior. The set of fish sculptures are a fun and interesting addition to any bookshelf or console table from Accessories by Sherwood.

Bobo Intriguing Objects Artifacts International

Bringing the ocean into your home can be done in multiple ways some ways don’t have to be so literal. You can use a piece like the candelabra from Bobo Intriguing Objects which has been made from reclaimed drift would and boasts an almost tentacle styled shape. Another great way to bring the sea side into your home is to add great lighting like the shell sconces seen above from Artifacts International.

Currey and Company Jaipur Rugs Inc.

When addressing mantels, alcoves or niches, placing a great relic like the Shell and stand from Currey and Company along with a grouping of florals and tall oversized candles would make a statement and show your appreciation towards the ocean. My current favorite sea inspired shape would have to be the branches of Coral seen in the rug from Jaipur above. Travel New Orleans for Furniture Ideas

New Orleans has gone through a lot of stress over the last couple of years but it remains a must visit U.S. city and these photos show why. The architecture and design in this 291 year old city brings it’s residents from the modern century to a time of European indulgence. Today the big easy maybe best be know for it’s hurricanes and Mardi Gras but there is a sense of old worldliness that has me inspired to bring a french flare into my own Interior.

While staying in the French Quarter you have got to take a walk down every street, turn every corner and discover something new. Make sure to walk the French Market after you sip on a café au lait and nibble on fresh beignets from Cafe’ Du Monde. Walk the St. Louis Cathedral square at night and have your cards or palm read just for fun! But do make sure to stop in to the Cathedral and take in the great Architecture which New Orleans was built around.

The best part of New Orleans are the courtyards and gardens. These outdoor spaces, as well as the Lobby’s and den’s of the Boutique French Quarter Hotels are where I find my Interior inspiration. Bringing the gardens into your space via small accessories like the finial shown below and other decorative accents is a great start. The nice thing about New Orleans is the amount of original art that can be bought on the street from the artist and you can usually talk them into a good price.

To really make an impact you must include a chandelier, like the one show above, in your interior. This will bring your company and you into the lounges and parlor rooms of so many great New Orleans destinations. Also by adding a frech country inspired chair or chaise you are adding style and sophistication to your space. My favorite thing to do is play off the furniture style by placing the piece in a modern space or next to a modern side table. This will bring more focus to the piece as art not just a comfy place to sit.

So when you are planning your next trip out of town remember to consider an inspiring location like New Orleans and don’t forget to take pictures of all the historical interiors and the furnishings so you can incorporate something like them in your home. The Academy of Art University was established in San Francisco in 1929 by Richard S. Stephens, a fine art painter who had accepted the position of Creative Director for Sunset Magazine. Assisted by his wife, Mrs. Clara Stephens, he opened the new school in a rented loft at 215 Kearny Street to teach advertising art. In a few years, a distinguished faculty of practicing art and design professionals was assembled and the school’s philosophy was formulated: hire established professionals to teach future professionals. In 1933 the curriculum was expanded to include Fashion Illustration, and in 1936 a Fine Art Department was added.

Dr. Elisa Stephens, the granddaughter of the school’s founder, succeeded her father as President of the Academy of Art University in 1992. Dr. Stephens has been committed to expanding the Academy’s curriculum to stay current with new technologies and industry trends, as well as making state-of-the art facilities and resources available to Academy students. In 2004, the name of the school was changed from Academy of Art College to Academy of Art University in recognition of its depth, scope and quality.

Today the University has more than 13,000 students, making it the largest private school of art and design in the country. Students now have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Associate of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Architecture, Certificate Programs or Continuing Art Education courses, with over 30 areas of academic emphasis.

The graduate student in the Interior Architecture & Design program will be prepared for professional practice through integrated theory, design and technology in tandem with industry standards. The graduate student will be taught to achieve a balance between the mastery of design skills that meet the needs of the profession, and the creativity and imagination that will lead to better ways of thinking about our environment.

For the graduate Interior Architecture & Design student’s Final Project, a site is selected in order to redesign its function and interiors; under the direction of a faculty of professional experts, concern for spatial issues, design innovation and attention to detail are emphasized. The concept of the project will demonstrate an energetic professional approach, and will be professionally exhibited upon approval by the Final Review committee.

While attending the Academy of art you will produce a body of work suitable for seeking professional opportunities in your chosen field of art and design. Solve creative problems within your field of art and design, including research and synthesis of technical, aesthetic, and conceptual knowledge. Communicate your ideas professionally and connect with their intended audience using visual, oral, and written presentation skills relevant to their field. Execute technical, aesthetic, and conceptual decisions based on an understanding of art and design principles. Evaluate work in the field, including your own work, using professional terminology. Recognize the influence of major cultural and aesthetic trends, both historical and contemporary, on art and design products. Learn the professional skills and behaviors necessary to compete in the global marketplace for art and design
