Question: We just moved into our first, albeit, tract home and have hardly anybudget. But, I know paint can do wonders. I ‘m nervous, but wanted to paint one wall in my dining room in a burst of burnt sienna, and then a softer light camel on the other walls. I was at a bookstore and was pleasantly surprised to see an article about top designers share their favorite colors to use on a single wall. I was elated and validated only to turn the page and read with horror “more top designers say why they would never paint just one wall”. One said a room’s emphasis should hardly be a wall, another said it gave the appearance of being afraid to commit entirely to that color. Now my head is spinning, and I’m standing in the middle of this bare room with a spatula in one hand and paint opener in the other paralyzed about doing the wrong thing.
Very Anxious
Answer: Hi! Very Anxious,
First, I want you to slowly put down the spatula and paint opener, and then sit down yourself, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Now, listen to my voice. The whole point of the article is that even top designers don’t have cookie cutter ideas, that’s what gives them each their special… je ne se qua! This is your home, go with your instincts–paints cheap enough. Now get up, paint a huge burnt sienna smiley face on your chosen wall, and get to work!
