Question: Dear Ms. Maite- Passionate for Design,
I live in Southern California and had a courtyard landscaped about 10 years ago. Of course it included all the no-nos of conservation: water hungry large fountains, giant banana trees, ginger , ferns, moss lined pavers and vines covering an arbor…all the water hungry softscape you can imagine! With a mandatory 3 day watering week I need to make some changes. I simply cannot take the huge water bills anymore. My problems further as the moss between the pavers is already dying, but grouting it seems very harsh and commercial . This courtyard is really an extension of our living space and there are wall to wall french doors facing it . We spend many days lounging and eating out there, so I need it to be dramatic and fun, but definitely eco- friendly.
Withering Away
Answer: Dear Withering Away,
Congratulations on wanting to make your environment more eco-friendly. The answer for all of us today is hardscape, hardscape, with small borders of living plants that are water wise. Striking foliage will provide habitat and food for bees, hummingbirds, butterflies etc. Most cities have some sort of native plant society that can make great suggestions and fill a garden with beneficial insects and beautiful birds.
I’m sure that little green monster of moss has cost you plenty over the years in water. Here’s my latest can’t live without— tumbled glass pieces to use in between your pavers. Not only are they made from recycled glass, and are a one time investment, but come in a fantastic assortment of colors from clear, orange, aqua, red, green. They literally sparkle in the sun! Around your arbor make colorful drapes out of outdoor material, and hang multi-colored lanterns from your trees. There are even fantastic outdoor rugs that will complete that outdoor living area feel. A trio of colorful pots with interesting succulents will add even more texture and dimension, and of course always keep you eye out at garage sales and swap meets for fabulous objects d’art to personalize your space.
