So when you are looking for a unique cabinet, side board, console or buffet and you go to a furniture designer to discuss building a custom piece, you can bring your own hardware. That is if the designer works with COM. Most do but others who are trying to make a profit off things like decorative hardware and overall material as well as the labor might not allow it. These Chinese details are a great option compared to the usual.

Get the look from one of the hottest shows on Television. Get inspired by Set Decorator Ellen Brill and her great designs. Read more in todays Blog. Follow the Link Below to see more images from the set and read about how you can achieve this look!
Often we forget to look beyond the actors when watching television or movies and when we do we miss out on a lot of great style ideas. One of my absolute favorite shows to take ideas from has to be Nip/Tuck. The show, which follows the lives of two pretentious egomaniac plastic surgeons and their crazy mixed up friends and family, has been a style star in Hollywood for five seasons. This has largely been due to the shows Set Decorator, Emmy nominated Ellen Brill. Ellen started as an interior designer and received her degree from UCLA in 1991. Her first job out of School was working in the art department for an independent film which she was credited as the set decorator on. After the films completion Brill was offered the same position on another film and has been in the television and film industry ever since.
In her sets for Nip/Tuck Brill brings inspirations from several different periods but has shown an affinity for incorporating mid-century modernist pieces from the likes of Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson and the Eames’. In the images above Brill was tasked to create spaces that were to be home to the McNamara/Troy surgeon team’s new Las Angeles office. The Pacific Blue sofa’s are a great homage to the location as well as the two palm inspired sculptures. The chandeliers give of an ambient light which bounces of the wood paneled walls and gives the waiting room a sense of warmth. This is something not often found in real life waiting rooms. The image directly above is the set designed to be the home of the bachelor surgeons. One would think this space was to nice to be a bachelor pad but even that is addressed in the series, as Dr. Troy often meets with his Interior Designer.
This set is one of my favorites and if you look closely you might see that the arm chairs are actually the same arm chairs from the set above. This is the nice thing about set design, you are allowed to incorporate pieces from one set in order to meet the requirements of the scene. This can also be true to your home. Try switching out the arm chair in your bedroom with the one in your living room just to switch things up. I am also inspired by the amazing floor covering which can be achieved at home by purchasing a large piece of canvas from an art store and painting out a pattern similar to the one seen in the image. Then coat the canvas with a layer of sealant to protect from wear and tare.
These Images are a mix of different spaces from when the show was in it’s first couple of seasons. The style then reflected something more down to earth, with it’s natural tones and interiors. The space at the top was the office of Dr. Troy and featured a grouping of Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chairs in a taupe tone. The bedroom shown belonged to Dr. McNamara and his wife. This is clear as the space looks shared and has a feminine touch as if Mrs. McNamara had decorated herself. Finally, we have the living room of Dr. Troy which has a cool tone that allows the viewer to appreciate the art in the space.
So if you are looking to add a little Nip/Tuck to your home here are some piece you might want to consider.
Remember when you were a child and it was your birthday or Christmas? Remember finding that one oblong present wrapped with a bow because it was extra special? Tearing back the wrapping to reveal a pink box with white script boasting the name on every little girls lips, Barbie. The original blonde bombshell was your favorite toy; due mostly to all the great accessories she required. Well now Barbie is no longer sitting her behind on plastic, shes moved up in the world thanks to the creative mind of Johnathan Adler. Though the interiors may have changed the house is still all Malibu.
Adler has combined alot of his own furniture designs along with pieces made custom for this particular project. The interiors respresent alot of key design ideas which Adler incorporates into his work on a regular basis. By keeping with-in his groovy mind set as well as mixing in classic Barbie colors like pink and orange, Adler has been able to bring the famous doll’s pad to life.
Now even though we love the work and the Interiors make us swoon we have to be realistic when it comes to incorporating this style into our own homes. Key design statements that will turn your space into a dream home like this are: Bright bold fabric choices, edited accessories, custom floor coverings and unique furniture pieces. By incorporating these into your home you can achieve the Barbie “look” with out overding it.

The other day we sat down with Heather Harmston and talked a bit about her experience in Interior Design. You’ll see just as we do that her work with 3D computer rendering is superb. All eyes are on Harrington for great new design and Heather delivers.
YourFurnitureLink: What design style are you in love with right now?
Heather Harmston: I feel like my personal taste and style varies from time to time. I meet new people that open my eyes to new ideas, I find hidden treasures in markets, the more I expose myself to the world of design, the faster my style changes. Currently, I love mixing and matching furniture, textures, art, accessories. I’m very graphic and I love abstract chaotic paintings. My favorite furniture style is one that puts a modern twist on a traditional design.
YFL: Where do you find the most inspiration?
HH: When starting a project I always love to find inspiration in things that are overlooked in life. I pull inspiration from the unexpected. I find that it spices up my projects and makes them unique. Texture and color have always been a huge influence on how I envision a space. In my experience people tend to look for inspiration in beautiful visually appealing things, but what’s the fun in that? I like to take a deeper look!
YFL: What will life be like after Harrington?
HH: All I can say is whatever I do, I hope I’m happy. Harrington has taught me so much about myself and about my abilities but the most important thing I have learned is that I truly am in the right field. I am always excited to work on projects and I enjoy every second of what I do. Ideally I would love to be a part of a creative team in an Event Production Company. A company that is bold and is not afraid of color or dramatic effect, one that stands out as being over the top in their designs.
YFL: Give us a Little information on the Project we see here.
HH: This project in particular was a culmination of vibrant colors and rigid textures. When designing this restaurant entitled RUST, a Moroccan Steakhouse in the heart of Chicago the goal was to create an intimate energy amongst the diners. An escape into a new culture that provokes conversation and liveliness. The concept was “finding the beauty of man in nature”. The interior space utilizes materials such as man made metals and new technology, while still incorporating a sense of earthiness by the way they were finished. The exterior or terrace of the restaurant acts as the beginning phase of “RUST”. The necessary elements of rust or oxidation are water, air and a metal. The terrace acts as a stripped down version of the interior focusing on the basic elements needed to create rust.
Great concept and Good luck Heather, we’ll be waiting to see whats next!

Be Primitive
About 30 Students from Harrington College of Design with Frank Fontana from HGTV enjoyed the excellent guidance from Glen Joffe and Steve Quinlan through their exiting, mysterious, unique and beautiful showroom “Primitive” on 130 North Jefferson Street in Chicago. “We learned a lot about the design from diverse cultures on the 4 floors of the showroom and we enjoyed to see the restoration shop in the lower level.” said a student.

Memorable, beautiful, comfortable and distinctive . . . at Jaipur Rugs they believe a rug should provide all this and more. Their rugs are created by using ancient techniques of master tribal weavers from the mountains of Northern India. Through this rich tradition, they produce strikingly beautiful hand-knotted, hand-tufted and flat woven designs. Jaipur rugs range from contemporary and transitional to lush traditional with rich colors and stunning appearance. Best of all, Jaipur Rugs brings this excellence, beauty, and distinction, affordably, into contemporary American homes.
Named after the famed royal city of Jaipur, the company was founded by N.K. Chaudhary, a visionary with nearly 30 years experience in rug manufacturing. His goal has always been to see India become the leader in the production of rugs worldwide, and from modest beginnings, Chaudhary grew his business from a small team of talented artisans to a force of 40,000 skilled masters and an in-house design team of over 30 designers. It is . Chaudhary’s vision allows Jaipur to have total control of the production of rugs and sets the company apart from many of its competitors. Today, more than 25 years after he set up his first looms for weavers, Chaudhary is still seeing his goal realized as he continues to push the envelope. In 1998, Chaudhary expanded his company to the United States and is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jaipur shares a collective dedication to minute detail, demanding quality control, and superior materials in every stage of the rug-crafting process, ensuring that each finished piece is consistently a true work of art at the best possible price point. Jaipur strives to improve and perfect their processes through innovation in product development and design. Their innovative technologies in communication, design, and optimization, as well as their collaboration with the latest home furnishing design firms, Jaipur Rugs is forever on the cutting edge of creativity and function.
From music to sculpture, architecture to poetry, great art has a unique power to envelope the mind, transcend the conscious, tap at the door of the soul, and take on a life all its own: thus begins a great artwork’s own history. Jaipur Rugs has aimed at creating the same exquisite artwork that collectors the world over have sought for centuries. Honored techniques that have spanned the ages; precision materials that will stand the test of time. In each Jaipur Rug, master artisans painstakingly hand-create a work of art in each rug. One Rug. One Story. Create your history.

When it comes to setting up your outdoor patio for the summer, remember that a great way to transform your space into a getaway is by adding luxuries that remind you of that trip to Mexico. Adding a bar to your deck is a fun way to lighten the mood and bring you and your guests to the tropics. B&I Direct Imports offers the very best in furniture and accessories for your home. From antiqued hardware to the great bamboo and wicker tiki bars you see here.
By adding a tiki bar to your patio you are definitely choosing a specific style for which you want your space to reflect. Make sure that when purchasing a tiki bar your other furnishings reflect the style of the bar. Nice modern teak furnishings with crisp white seat cushions may not be the direction you want to go when incorpotrating a tiki bar. Try adding painted wood furniture, bamboo seating and color color color! You’ve purchased a tiki bar for a reason so go crazy and get inspired.
Now if you have the room for the tiki gazebo shown above go for it. This particular piece creates a focal point in your back yard and it draws people into it for a more intimate conversation. This also makes a nice hideaway during family BBQ’s so when your guests start driving you nuts you can sneak away for a breather. This piece is also a great option for those with children. The gazebo instantly becomes a fort or castle without the shiny primary colored plastics which have become all to poular these days. A childs imagination will bring the back yard to far away places.
Looking for a bar that is a little bit more reserved or modern? This piece made of bamboo and featuring a fossil stone top would make a great addition to any back yard, porch, patio or deck. Very sleek and stylish it houses drawers and door storage as well as a bamboo cutting board. Dimensions for the piece are 74 x 25 x 44
You can find a lot from B&I but what we love here at YFL is outdoor bars. Keep them stocked and ready cause you never know who might come over!
Get Inspired by this outdoor 3D animation and incorporate B&I direct into your Home

The Tucker Robbins goal is to bring the spirit and craft from the tribal cottage industry to contemporary life. This Dialog with ancient peoples, spanning continents and centuries, brings insight into what we have forgotten about today’s furniture industry. The Tucker Robbins furniture line also brings to life a new sense of “green” living by incorporating salvaged materials and working with the people who not only manage the forests where wood is grown but also care for it.
The Tucker Robbins look is that of refined rusticity. This means he’s added a polished edge given to a piece that has been reclaimed from an ancient village. Tuckers design process revolves around the idea of collaboration and exploration into the possibilities of the material and form of the piece. This is the approach he takes when working with a client on a custom piece. He starts at his studio on Long Island and will introduce you to many objects from all over the world that have influenced his creative journey.
Then, when working on a custom piece for a client he will walk with you through 16,000 square feet of beautiful material both recycled and carefully harvested from all over the world. Woods Tucker Robbins uses in his pieces include satinwood, acacia, nadun, kumbuk, narra and mountain pine. These are all extremely rare woods whose natural beauty have been aged and dried in order to create interesting furnishings for your home.
Tucker Robbin’s truley does work with the people whose homelands he is inspired from. The Toraja women of Suluwesi, Indonesia used this goblet shape seen in the table above for their mortar which serves as a pedestal base for the round table. He’s inspired by jewelry and homes, and many other interesting objects which he incorporates into all his work both catalog and custom.

I would like to share my personal experience with you as a retailer. I can’t tell you how many people love and bought from me the climbing men. The interesting part of the purchase is not the monetary sale, but the meaning behind the sale. Each person who has bought a climbing man or men, has had made comment of what it meant to them. I have never had a product trigger personal comments like this one consistently. I have had powerful executives more than once, tell me how they were putting them in their offices and was a reminder to them, some shared specifically that moment. One woman who just finished some therapy for a sickness she was fighting and found it inspirational. All I can say is WOW and if you listen, retail can be very, very interesting.

Students at Harrington diligently take in as much information as possible, so they may have a better understand of how the furniture industry functions. They integrate classroom learning with industry exposure. This was my experience when I attended Harrington 20 years ago and it has only gotten more sophisticated and advantageous for today’s students that attend Harrington.
The classics are classic. They never go out of style and are well appreciated as students are exposed to different periods of furniture and how they can be incorporated into each of their projects.
