Entrances are the eyes that reflect the soul of the entire house. Whether your front door opens onto a three story foyer replete with grand staircase and gilded chandelier or is simply a few feet long, the impact is the same. It should be the proverbial mirror into your soul. A reflection of your passions, dreams, and outlook. Too heady? I don’t think so . If your home is not the place where you can safely express yourself , then where in the world is it? Go find it– step outside your front door and spend a few minutes looking in, and put the “me” into “my house”.
Elegant, but a little flirtatious (the perfect woman?). This chinosserie beauty blends beautifully with traditional furnishings or a more contemporary home.
The high arms make this masculine bench perfect for lounging lengthwise with the morning paper & latte, or better yet, gazing out the window…
The boldness of the lines and girth are juxtaposed by the warmth of the natural wood and the beauty of natural grain. You can feel the waves lapping and the warm sand on you feet…
Petite accent consoles are to furniture design what appetizers are to a main entre at a restaurant.
Ever notice that usually the most interesting dishes on a menu are the appetizers? They tend to be more creative and satisfying than the official meal, and come in lot of tasty selections.
So it is with small consoles. They too are petite enough that you never have to ask ”do I have room for this?”. Instead they charm you with their proportions, design and functionality.
Not only do they bring a sparkle to any bland wall space, they provide that extra storage space no one can ever resist (just like all those cheese plates and those innocent looking puff pasties we’ve been been sampling since Thanksgiving).
Small consoles are also perfect to use instead of nightstands. Average sized night tables are swallowed up when placed next an Eastern King bed whereas using a console in it’s place balances the room and provides ample surface space for all the lotions, potions, and paperbacks.
Small consoles are versatile, filling and fashionable, and compared to those pricey appetizers, they’re a bargain.

Get Inspired by the beauty of nature and bring the out doors in. I remember when I was growing up my favorite things about the fall included the smell of bon fires in the air, the change of colors and the decor my mother made sure to spread throughout our entire home. Pumpkin’s and gourds spread around the house made you feel like everyday was spent surrounded by nature. make sure your house says fall with easy and affordable accents from your local farm or grocer.
This is such an inspiring project! We are looking forward to what else is going to come from those talented fingers. This is a great example of what good Interior Design can be and it’s coming from Harrington College of Design. Keep up the good work Laura!

Noir provides solid and strong well built tables. Hand finished, hewn surfaces give the impression of vintage, but well kept. To achieve better quality control, Noir’s furniture is manufactured mainly from their own factory in China and Indonesia. They select lumbers from well-known suppliers who guarantee their drying process specifically for export. On larger panels and backs, they use plywood to minimize the risk of shrinking or cracking.
All finished are hand applied and sanded repeatedly, then finished of with a lacquer top coat or wax. While they take measures to protect their furniture from climate difference in the US. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause warping or even cracking. Because of this, they strongly recommend, solid wood furniture should not be placed under direct sunlight. Dining rooms are a place where memories are made. Whether you are sitting down to a meal with your family or playing a rather intense game of hold-em with the guys, your dining room is the place you go to first. Your dining room should say something about you and your personal taste. Larger tables mean more people can play the game while smaller tables suggest that the home has a small but growing family residing with in it. When you choose your dining table you have to think about these things. Are you going to be entertaining? Should you maybe consider a table that has leafs for a more transitional piece? It all depends on what you will be using the table for.
Other important dining room furniture includes chairs, of course, side boards of buffets for storage, Display cabinets for the wedding china or crystal stemware and don’t forget to accessorize. When choosing seating for the dining room make sure you consider all options. Benches have become more and more popular over the years but prove to be a problem when guest need to leave the table and must interrupt fellow bench warmers. Traditional seating can either be solid wood chairs with seat cushions or upholstered seats. When purchasing upholstered chairs make sure you learn about the construction first, there is nothing worse than sitting down to eat and sinking an extra two or three inches.
When looking for a side board or buffet you have to take size and scale into consideration first. Then think about the style you are looking for. Are you more of a traditionalist or is sleek and modern in your future? Whatever you decide Dovetail will have what you are looking for.

Though French Heritage is only twenty years old, the roots of the company began years before, as part of a family passion for antiques. When co-founder Jacques Wayser was a child in France, he and his siblings would follow their parents on their weekly visits to the Paris antique market. There, the Wayser family learned how to shop for and collect antiques.
The first collection introduced by the company was Richelieu, in 1984. Richelieu was a breakthrough in the furniture industry. Not only were the pieces elegantly crafted using mortise and tenon joints, dovetailed drawers and pegs instead of nails; for the first time the furniture was distressed to look like genuine antiques. It was an innovation that changed the way antique reproductions looked forever.
In the 1990’s French Heritage saw great expansion. In 1993, the company debuted the popular Maison Provence collection, a grouping of antique French country designs. The next year, they introduced their high-end collection, De Bournais, beautifully handcrafted pieces with beeswax finishes. The furniture seen on this page are all from the De Bournais collection. This collection offers the most unique pieces which feature traditional lines while incorporating modern trends like zebra print, stripes and rich color painted wood finishes.
Harrington College of Design Professor Peter Klick Shows students the importance of sketching by displaying his Sketches through out the school. Harrington also offers an Interior Design Elective called Conceptual Sketching which takes students through the process of starting with an idea and putting pen to paper and first designing your work by hand before bringing it into AutoCAD, SketchUp, 3D MAX or other popular interior design computer programs.
Students from the conceptual sketching class hit up Millennium Park, Chicago for a day of Sketching. Millennium Park is a great place to people watch or sketch. The park is filled with several sculptures and is home to the Frank Gehry Music Pavilion.
Here is a great example of working from a sketch and what a final project can turn out to look like. In this sketch you can see that Peter makes notes throughout his rough draft sketch that eventually become details used in the finished space seen right next to it below. This is why sketching is so important!
Think sketching with pen and paper is out of date? Well you aren’t wrong exactly. This video from MIT shows how new technology is affecting the design world!

To truly appreciate a Maria Yee piece, one must understand the person behind it. Her personal experiences shape everything from the furniture’s design concept to its creation. Maria’s passion, struggles and triumphs imbue each piece with a vitality and intensity that speak volumes without saying a word. A child of China’s Cultural Revolution, Maria witnessed first hand the havoc wreaked by the fanatic anti-intellectual radicals. At age 15, she was sent to work in a rock quarry and her parents were imprisoned. Inquisitive but quiet, she enjoyed riding her bicycle and swimming in the Pearl River. While her childhood dream was to be a physicist, her father, a professor of architecture, sparked her early interest in design. When the Cultural Revolution began in 1966, the radicals imprisoned her father and later sent him to a tea farm. Her mother, a school teacher, was placed under house arrest in the elementary school where she taught. She was later sent to work at a pig farm. Maria was taken from her family and forced to work in the rock quarry. Only 15 years old, the quiet girl’s creative spirit was cruelly snuffed out. In its place, only the spirit to survive remained.
The artistic merit of Maria Yee’s furniture goes beyond beautiful lines and elegant shapes. Every item is handcrafted with sophisticated joinery techniques, handed down through the ages and refined for a modern manufacturing environment, with no nails or screws marring the integrity of the raw materials. This makes every piece unique and personal. To create her solid bamboo furnishings, Maria Yee further developed her BreathingJoinery™ specifically for BambooTimbre™. By handcrafting the pieces in pure joinery without nails or screws, hazards such as warping, cracking, splitting, shrinking and rattling associated with traditional bamboo furniture are eliminated.
Keeping with her commitment to offering new, unique options in home furnishings, Maria Yee developed her Air Frame™ and BEST™ joinery techniques to create exceptionally strong solid bamboo pieces that boast a clean, contemporary look. Maria Yee pioneered EcoLuxury™ – luxury that is ecologically responsible. We abide by our core belief that if we take from the earth, we should give back to the earth. Maria Yee respects Earth’s natural resources and is sensitive to its dwindling reserves. Select products are handcrafted with 100 percent Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwood, and other pieces use only hardwood species which are responsibly grown and selectively harvested. As an alternative to fast disapearing hardwood, Maria Yee developed rapidly renewable BambooTimbre™ and RidgeBamboo™.
The company is dedicated to protecting the earth by innovating green manufacturing processes and adheres to strict recycling principles. Furthermore, energy conservation is a top priority in both the production and design.

A furniture company for the new modernist. Sleek and chic, each piece of furniture in designed to fit into any modern environment. The Corbin chair shown above offers a comfortable seating option and an excellent design style. Perfect for your office lobby, living room, den, or as an accent chair in the bedroom. A great option for the lap top user is the Dell side table (seen above). The table pulls up to any chair or sofa and slides under the bottom, so you can work on your laptop with ease. This is also a great table to use while entertaining. Perfect for cocktails and a dish of nuts this style is the modern update of the “tv tray.”
One of my favorite things to do on a sunny summer afternoon is relax with a good book and a nice cold drink. The Bethany Arm Chair, above, is a great chair to kick back and relax in. Made of solid walnut and upholstered in black leather, which has been treated and is so comfortable and supple. This piece says high style but is offered at a great mid market price. Can you see yourself or your guest getting cozy in the Bethany arm chair? I know I do. It reminds me of a piece you might find in a home library or den. Where do you see the Bethany chair?
Nuevo has a variety of styles and collections ranging from classic modern to today’s contemporary. One of the more contemporary pieces is the Stephan Sofa, seen above top. This small scale piece is great for apartment or condo living. It’s also a great piece for those college students who are looking to furnish their first apartment. Sort of a classic through back, the Hermes Occasional Chair in white leather makes for a nice light weight chair that you can move around easy in the event of company. Light and airy is always a goal one tries to achieve in a modern interior and this chair will make it happen. My favorite dining table from Neuvo has to be the Victor. The tables black stone top and the tripod base are artistic and will add a sense of architectural style to your space.
Above: The Fresno Dining Table has great draftsman quality and style. The size is perfect for a six person dinner or offers a great alternative to a classic desk. Made of hard wood with turned legs this is a piece for all interiors. If you’re looking for stylish outdoor furniture Nuevo has several collections of woven pieces with soft cushions. The Low outdoor lounger fits to your form for maximum comfort and has a great sensual appearance that will make any one jealous.
Below: If you are looking to update, add or buy new lighting for your modern home Nuevo has an extensive collection of pendant lights, ceiling mounted pieces, floor and table lamps. Two of my favorite pendants are the Marina Pendant (below left) and Orba Pendant. (below right)
