Curving around like the crest of a plywood wave, the “C” table—designed by Albuquerque-based Scott White, with a little help from Mara Schweikert of Soma Interiors—hollows out beneath a flat top to make space for a stack of magazines. Scrap from each piece is then used to create additional accessories, resulting in a highly efficient, low-waste system. This is such a great design for modern living. We especially enjoy the magazine rack base. We are looking forward to what other possible finishes the team at white design come up with for this great piece.

Urban Woods is the leading designer of sustainable furniture from reclaimed wood, eco-friendly materials and environmentally conscious manufacturing processes. The distinct beauty of reclaimed wood, finished with rich water based, non-toxic stains, is preserved in handmade furniture and made in Los Angeles, California.
The Palisades Collection, seen above, was designed to accentuate the natural beauty of the vintage wood used to craft each element. The solid legs of the dining table are creatively exposed at the table top, showing the incredibly tight, clear grain of the wood. The naturally aged patina in the thick planks of the table top and bench are lightly sanded, preserving their history. The Palisades floor mirror opens up any room like a grand portal and makes a great front hall mirror.
Much of the reclaimed wood was originally harvested and milled 50 to 100 years ago, giving the wood unparalleled stability and resistance to future distortion. At Urban Woods they strive to make beautiful, eco-friendly furniture in the most sustainable way. They never use tropical hardwoods which harm the rain forest to harvest, MDF or toxic glues.
The Melrose Living Room Collection seen above offers a credenza that is fully equipped for all your media needs. It is pre-wired for cable and power, with three push sensitive drawers for organizing media and two cabinets for all electronic components. Wide and comfortable club chairs with organic cotton upholstery surround the coffee table, which has a low profile drawer for housing remote controls. The Melrose book case is open on all sides to exhibit personal mementos and maintain an airy living space.
Urban Woods exclusive use of vintage reclaimed wood has many advantages; the grain of the timber with its tight growth rings shows the superior density of the wood from ancient trees, and the natural, aged patina and color of the old-growth timber is preserved in the manufacturing process, giving the furniture a look and feel that can not be replicated in new wood.
Looking for sleek silhouettes and organic elegance in the bedroom? The Sunset bed and bench (above) are stately and inviting with solid wood frames and deeply tufted, organic cotton. The Sunset dresser and end table are striking complements to the room and offer ample storage space and full-extension drawers. The clean designs of the Sunset Collection fit seamlessly into the traditional, contemporary or modern room.

If thinking of avant-garde concrete designs brings to your mind Roman arches, vaults, columns or better yet city sidewalks, welcome to the World of Innovative Concrete Couture. Oh, the things you will see! You have stumbled upon a fantastic journey of man-made, handmade unique material of modern quality, one that has infinite applications, and is used more than any other in the world. No wonder, because there are not many other media that would posses both the strength and elasticity of concrete. Also the durability of concrete is not to be taken lightly, for it is often used for fireproofing steel structures. And then there is also the Pervious Concrete which significantly can reduce noise, the Glass Concrete and so on…
James DeWulf is The Man when it comes to all custom concrete applications. LA Confidential describes him as “a renegade in the world of kitchen design, and his raw scrappiness comes through in his bold countertops and sinks.” This is the man who is not only the first but he is the ONLY manufacturer “in the United States able to produce a ground-breaking line of 5’10” x 10’ prefabricated concrete slabs.” In the world of concrete design this is huge news.
DeWulf Concrete produces eco friendly dining tables, built in custom countertops, sinks, floors, stools, beds, but wait… here is the thing, you can actually commission an artist (DeWulf is an atelier for functional art artists) to create your furniture or anything else concrete. According to the Distinction magazine “James DeWulf is raising the bar on concrete design both visually and ecologically”. Custom shapes, textures, colors, indoor and out, combined with the ultimate enthusiasm towards the medium… at DeWulf sky is the limit. And so their projects vary from huge commercial productions (hotels, nightclubs) to more intimate residential settings (Malibu Tin House designed by Frank Gehry, NY home decorated by Albet Hadley). With such vast array of design projects, there is one thing James DeWulf and his team of talented artisans have in common – a great passion and love for what they do.

To truly appreciate a Maria Yee piece, one must understand the person behind it. Her personal experiences shape everything from the furniture’s design concept to its creation. Maria’s passion, struggles and triumphs imbue each piece with a vitality and intensity that speak volumes without saying a word. A child of China’s Cultural Revolution, Maria witnessed first hand the havoc wreaked by the fanatic anti-intellectual radicals. At age 15, she was sent to work in a rock quarry and her parents were imprisoned. Inquisitive but quiet, she enjoyed riding her bicycle and swimming in the Pearl River. While her childhood dream was to be a physicist, her father, a professor of architecture, sparked her early interest in design. When the Cultural Revolution began in 1966, the radicals imprisoned her father and later sent him to a tea farm. Her mother, a school teacher, was placed under house arrest in the elementary school where she taught. She was later sent to work at a pig farm. Maria was taken from her family and forced to work in the rock quarry. Only 15 years old, the quiet girl’s creative spirit was cruelly snuffed out. In its place, only the spirit to survive remained.
The artistic merit of Maria Yee’s furniture goes beyond beautiful lines and elegant shapes. Every item is handcrafted with sophisticated joinery techniques, handed down through the ages and refined for a modern manufacturing environment, with no nails or screws marring the integrity of the raw materials. This makes every piece unique and personal. To create her solid bamboo furnishings, Maria Yee further developed her BreathingJoinery™ specifically for BambooTimbre™. By handcrafting the pieces in pure joinery without nails or screws, hazards such as warping, cracking, splitting, shrinking and rattling associated with traditional bamboo furniture are eliminated.
Keeping with her commitment to offering new, unique options in home furnishings, Maria Yee developed her Air Frame™ and BEST™ joinery techniques to create exceptionally strong solid bamboo pieces that boast a clean, contemporary look. Maria Yee pioneered EcoLuxury™ – luxury that is ecologically responsible. We abide by our core belief that if we take from the earth, we should give back to the earth. Maria Yee respects Earth’s natural resources and is sensitive to its dwindling reserves. Select products are handcrafted with 100 percent Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwood, and other pieces use only hardwood species which are responsibly grown and selectively harvested. As an alternative to fast disapearing hardwood, Maria Yee developed rapidly renewable BambooTimbre™ and RidgeBamboo™.
The company is dedicated to protecting the earth by innovating green manufacturing processes and adheres to strict recycling principles. Furthermore, energy conservation is a top priority in both the production and design.
